One of the key driving ideas behind Airthologie® came from our realization of the many problems with the typical mass CPG (consumer packaged goods) manufacturers.
First came the packaging; lots of plastic wrapping, with additional and unnecessary plastic tops and caps that you opened and immediately just threw away. Often built with heavy glass or plastic containers, that require significant energy to transport, often more than the crucial contents themselves.
It’s arguable that plastic waste is the biggest environmental catastrophe of our time, as at least 10 million tons of plastic waste is discarded into the oceans annually. It takes centuries for standard petrochemical based plastics to break down in the natural environment. The waste piling up in the ocean is growing at an alarming rate.
Once with the package in hand, the follow up task is to either locate a hidden location for the cheap scents, light a flame for the candle versions, or deal with the complex setup of a water diffuser with bottles and water fill ups for high end essential oil diffusers. The worst are the standard plug in heating elements that are needed to heat up the toxic fragrance ingredients in the most common air fresheners, that also often have to be placed in odd locations because they need a constant source of electricity to power the resistive heater used to heat and vaporize the fragrance oils.
Regular resistive heating plug in air freshener units are surprisingly energy hungry; the small 2.5W power usage of a typical plug in multiplied out by the roughly 100 million plug-in type air fresheners that are in use over the course of year, requires about 3 million barrels of oil worth of energy to power them.
Then the most important part; the scent itself. Often initially overwhelming followed by a long bout of underwhelming and plasticky smelling scent, that quickly dissipates and empties out much quicker than often claimed.
Regular air fresheners, of the both the solid and liquid kind, are largely packaged with petrochemical feedstocks as a stabilizer or aerosol, which is why they are so low-cost, capable of being packaged in unsealed containers.
Our research led us to many alternatives that are available in the market, including scented candles and the very popular and common essential oil diffusers. Many of these options had problems of their own, either they were similar in their toxic chemical production as standard air fresheners, or were high maintenance and high cost.
Scented candles are very similar in they usually contain petroleum based paraffin and release toxic compounds as they melt, due to the necessity of providing a fuel source to maintain the flame.
Our environmental concern extended to the question of how these air fresheners reached our customers; was it truly better to have products delivered directly to you the user from us and skip the middleman?
Many of the life-cycle analysis studies done on e-commerce indicate that the environmental aspect of e-commerce is substantially superior to that of traditional retailing where more waste and energy is expended in the distribution of packaged goods to large stores where consumers then must visit usually driving their own vehicles to collect. With e-commerce, a much shorter and direct energy expenditure occurs as the original product is produced in our facility and then hitches a ride on already existing delivery circuits and routes to arrive at your doorstep direct, with the least amount of packaging required.
The result of our extensive review into this market led to the conclusion that a new solution was needed and ultimately our research and product development led to the creation of Airthologie®.
